This little chap is highly trained in subterfuge and able to cunningly disguise the fact that he is on a secret mission to keep my teenagers from finding my (did I say it’s MY?) chocolate Easter Egg!
Continuing on from my previous post this is the second part of the instructions on how to make him. Day 1 tells you all the information you need regarding materials and also lists the abbreviations (I’m based in the UK and use UK terminology for my crochet).
This time we’ll be making the Head, Eyes and Goggles.
Here we go!
Using 5mm hook and 2 strands Yellow work 2ch
Round 1 – 6dc into 1st ch
Round 2 – 2dc into each dc x 6 (12sts)
Round 3 – (1dc, 2dc into next st) x 6 (18sts)
Round 4 – (2dc, 2dc into next st) x 6 (24sts)
Round 5 – (3dc, 2dc into next st) x 6 (30sts)
Round 6 – 2dc, 2dc into next st, (4dc, 2dc into next st) x 5, 2dc (36sts)
Round 7 – (5dc, 2dc into next st) x 6 (42sts)
Round 8 to 12 – work 5 rounds of 42dc
Insert bottle base and mark around the point where the crochet stops.
Remove bottle and cut just below the mark.
Round 13 – Going back to the crochet work 1dc into back loops of each stitch on next round (42sts)
Round 14 to 15 – Work a further 2 rounds in yellow
Insert cut off section of bottle
Now for the decreases:
Round 16 – (dc2tog, 5dc) x 6 (36sts)
Round 17 – (dc2tog, 4dc) x 6 (30sts)
Round 18 – (dc2tog, 3dc) x 6 (24sts)
Round 19 – (dc2tog, 2dc) x 6 (18sts)
Round 20 – (dc2tog, 1dc) x 6 (12sts)
Round 21 – dc2tog x 6 (6sts)
Fasten off and work in any loose ends and push inside bottle.
Join the Head to the Body by sewing across six stitches at the back of each.
Eyes & Goggles – make 2
Use one strand unless stated otherwise
Using 4mm hook and Cream work 2ch
Round 1 – 6dc into 1st ch, ss into 1st st
Round 2 – 1ch, 2dc into each dc, ss into 1st st (12sts)
Round 3 – 1ch, (1dc, 2dc into next st) x 6, ss into 1st st (18sts)
Round 4 – 1ch, 1dc, 2dc into next st, (2dc, 2dc into next st) x 5, 1dc, ss into 1st st (24sts)
Round 5 – Working into the back loops of each stitch, 1ch, (3dc, 2dc into next st) x 6, ss into 1st st (30sts)
Fasten off
Join one strand of Silver Grey to any front loop on round 4
Round 6 – 1ch, 1dc into same st, 1dc into each remaining front loop, ss into 1st st (24sts)
Round 7 – 1ch, working into the back loop of each st: (3dc, 2dc into next st) x 6, ss into 1st st (30sts)
Round 8 – ss through back loop of each st on round 7 and, at the same time through back loop of each st on round 5
Fasten off and work in any loose ends.
Eyes
Using 4mm hook and Brown work 2ch.
6dc into 1st ch, ss into 1st st.
Fasten off and work in any loose ends.
Stitch the Goggles together across 3 centre stitches.
Stitch the Eyes in place
Using black, stitch a pupil into the centre of each eye
Using cream, add a highlight to each eye.
Head Strap
With right side facing using 4mm hook and one strand Black find 3 stitches on the outer edge of one of the goggles. Attach to the back loop of the 1st st.
Row 1 – work 1ch, 1dc into same st, 2dc, turn
Row 2 – 1ch, 3dc, turn
Repeat row 2 until strap will fit snugly around top of head. Fasten off and stitch to opposite side of goggles.
Stitch the Head strap and goggles in place so that the strap half overlaps the Body when the top is closed. This will disguise the gap where the lid fits the base.
The next post will show you how to make his legs and feet.
